Please note that the next FAQ is specifically for Teachers (NY education professionals).
Chapter 25 of the Laws of 2024 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols and guidance on identifying abused or maltreated children with intellectual or developmental disabilities within the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework. This law requires that mandated reporters, including those who have previously undergone the current training, complete the updated training curriculum by November 17, 2026. If you have completed an approved provider Mandated Reporter Training between 11/1/2022 and 8/31/2025 you will need additional information in order to be in full compliance with the recent changes in law. Approved providers will begin offering updated mandated reporter training workshops to include the new requirements outlined in Chapter 25 of the Laws of 2024 on September 1, 2025. In addition, if you have completed Mandated Reporter Training between 11/1/2022 and 8/31/2025, you may complete a short (15 minute) addendum on this additional topic which will be available through most approved providers.
Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols to reduce implicit bias in decision-making processes, strategies for identifying adverse childhood experiences, and guidelines to assist in recognizing signs of abuse or maltreatment while interacting virtually within the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework. This law requires that mandated reporters, including those who have previously undergone the current training, complete the updated training curriculum by April 1, 2025.
Training related to child abuse is required for the following professions:
Athletic Trainers, Certified Behavior Analyst Assistants, Chiropractors, Creative Arts Therapists, Dental Hygienists, Dentists, Licensed Behavior Analysts, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Master Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Mental Health Counselors, Optometrists, Physicians, Podiatrists, Psychoanalysts, Psychologists, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners and Teachers (see next FAQ). - Q. I am a TEACHER/NY education professional, why do I need to take the Child Abuse addendum (2nd update)?
-
A. Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework is required for those
seeking educator certification and/or staff qualifying as mandated reporters. The amended Section 413 of
the Social Services Law requires the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse
and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework to include the addition of guidance on identifying an abused or
maltreated child when such child is an individual with an intellectual or developmental disability.
The law requires that every person who is required to take the mandated training related to child abuse,
including those who have previously undergone this training, must complete the updated curriculum by
November 17, 2026.
Implementation Timeline:
September 1, 2025- All NYS Approved Providers of this workshop are required to integrate and present the new curriculum in trainings offered on or after September 1, 2025.
October 1, 2025- Applications for certification submitted on or after October 1, 2025, will require completion of the second updated workshop for issuance of the certificate. New York State Approved Teacher Preparation Programs entering recommendations for certification on or after October 1, 2025, must verify that the second updated workshop has been completed at the time of the recommendation.
November 17, 2026- All educators and school staff who are mandated reporters must complete the Second Updated Child Abuse Identification workshop by November 17, 2026. - Q. What is a "subscription"?
- A. On our website, a course subscription simply means that your ONE-TIME payment for the workshop/training will give you a full year of access to the course so that you may complete the training at your own pace. You will NOT be charged again. There are NO monthly charges or auto renewals.
- Q. How secure is the registration and payment?
- A. Your registration information will not be shared with a third party. Your payment information is securely processed by the credit card company and not kept in our records. Your receipt will be automatically emailed directly to you. The NYSED requires your First and Last name on our account registration page. The NYSED does not require middle name/initial.
- Q. How many hours do I need to complete for my licensure?
- A. Licensing boards have individual requirements. Ensure your compliance by checking directly with the licensing agency of your profession.
- Q. Do I need to complete the course in one session?
- A. No. You may log off and on anytime. The timer feature maintains time spent on the course and where you left off. Take as long as you need to complete the course.
- Q. Is there a test?
- A. Yes. Multiple choice quizzes. To enhance the user experience there is a review quiz after each topic section and a final quiz at the end of the course.
- Q. How do I receive and submit my proof of completion?
-
A. Upon completion of the course there are 2 convenient options to receive
your official certificate of completion: 1) You may print it, 2) Have it
emailed to you. You will also see an option to submit to the NYSED (OTI/TEACH) electronically,
which is a state requirement for training such as the Violence, Child Abuse, DASA, and the Autism workshop.
For all NON-education professionals, such as NY healthcare professionals, for the Child Abuse workshop only electronically submit to the NY Office of Professions (NYOOP), and not to the NYSED OTI/TEACH (Office of Teaching Initiatives).
The NYSED OTI does not want you to submit your printed certificate of completion to them - although the NYOOP still accepts certificates for healthcare professionals. There is no requirement to submit Infection Control to the NYSED. Simply maintain a copy of your Infection Control certificate in the event the NYSED NYOOP requests proof of completion. - Q. Am I able to acquire additional copies of my certificate of completion?
- A. Yes, by logging back in. A permanent record of completion is maintained. Please note that other providers may charge additional fees for copies of completion certificates.
- Q. Does the NYSED (NY State) need a SSN (Social Security Number)?
-
A. The New York State Education Department requires that all applicants for professional licensure provide their Federal Social Security Number (SSN).
- For NY non-education professionals (e.g. healthcare professionals) without a SSN, the New York Office of Professions (NYOOP) requires an assigned random, computer generated nine-digit identifier.
More information is available on the New York Office of Professions website (see section on Social Security Numbers):
www.op.nysed.gov/about/general-information-policies
- For NY education professionals (e.g. teachers, etc.) without a SSN, they would have used a Teach Access Number (TAN) on their TEACH account.
Instructions to apply for a TAN on TEACH can be found on the below webpage.
